Random Museum Ordnance Photos

Data just says experimental, purpose unknown, but I'm pretty sure I've seen one in a museum identified as a bangalore. The display could have been incorrect, but seems possible.

A couple of notes here, the small mortar with red markings is from Lake Erie, a company that made riot control materials for many decades. The mortar is from about the 20s-30s. I have a similar piece with incorrect fins, mine was WP loaded. The black MT fuzes are strictly for flechette, the first setting is MA, for "muzzle-action".

Read above the photos - I need to check but I think that it is just above a 60 - 61 or 62

62mm. CN-DM is the fill on the one in the photo. Here is a photo of my WP filled, with the incorrect fins.

It is a mortar, but I've never seen what fires it. Lake Erie was a US company that made riot control devices, I believe that they were eventually absorbed by one of the others - Federal, S&W, AAI - for many of the riot control systems they intentionally made them slightly different calibers, one explanation was that this way military loads could not be mistakenly used.

As long as the 62mm Lake Erie rounds are being discussed, here is one more for the mix. I have had this one for 30+ years and had never seen any other varieties until now. Nor have I ever seen any information about the launching system or who it was intended for.

The company, as far as I know, was always involved with riot control items and other Police equipment, not munitions for the U.S. Military. The CN-DM shell almost makes sense but the WP smoke (rather than a burning type) is clearly over the line. And this one is obviously a combat load. So I have always assumed it was an attempt to market a military product, sort of like the Miranda brothers American Ordnance Company.

I'm pretty sure I've seen some catalog info on WP availability, but it was back during the strike-busting days, well before the use of the term "non-lethal". I'll have to check the Swearengen book and see if I can come up with a ref. Nice round Rick, if you see a spare set of fins....

Sorry I've been a little slow posting lately, Sarin, our beloved Jack Russell Terrier, died recently and this has caused some significant disruption at the family level. We have since been joined by Puca, an 8 week old Jack Russell, who has far more energy than I and is demanding a significant amount of attention. I'll try to keep up with postings.

The case for the 81mm mortar above is marked as Ballistic Smoke Round. I'm pretty certain that this is incorrect, this looks very much like the XM123 mortar delivered sensor. I have an incomplete but marked example in the collection, included below for comparison. Mine is missing the fin assembly and the collar which fits over the terrain brakes and antenna assembly.
