Random Museum Ordnance Photos

3&4 is another experimental US grenade. The mortar is a little confusing - I asked for a translation from some of the folks back in my old workplace. The response I got was "The mortar you sent for translation reads 2 (or 2nd) model armour piercing howitzer explosive/shell". Doesn't answer a lot of questions now, does it?

Is that grenade glass or translucent plastic?

Right, that 60mm is raising even more questions than before... Is that maybe some sort of movie prop or display piece or so?

Looks like a gray plastic to me, possibly with a metal liner. The mortar has me stumped. Does not make much sense, no matter how you look at it. I cannot imagine it being a movie prop, as it is in a major military museum collection and they are normally more particular what they accept. When you look at it in context with the other items you see photos of in this thread, that would be very much out of place. That is why I liked the item, it raises questions. Pulled out another photo of the plastic grenade, it may be helpful.

Is that combined M34 WP for a vehicle installation? Any designation available? Were these operational?

EOD this is identified as an M176. See Webereod's post in this thread from 16 Dec for a little more.

John, on the 120mm the data recorded is:
Total length Max: 1.16 METERS
PROJECTILE LENGTH 983
PROJECTILE EXPOSED LENGTH 465
PROJECTILE DIAMETER MAX 55
PROJECTILE DIAMETER MIN 24
CARTRIDGE LENGTH 690
CARTRIDGE DIAMETER MAX 151
CARTRIDGE DIAMETER MIN 130

Thanks Jeff,

It looks like they filled the case with powder through the base, similar to the 106RR HEAT round with the long tail boom.

I don't think the grease bucket bomb has the right igniter in it, i would have thought a anti lift switch would be better,,,, Dave

I thought that it was one of that series, smoke or one of the CN-DM candles.

Most likely the "Fuze, Smoke Pot, M208" fitted on the Smoke Pot, Floating, SGF2, AN-M7A1.

Nice cluster!!!!

Is that French proj. with heavy boattail a 105mm?

What is that brown drum?

I want to say that the French projo is a 155mm, but would have to check the files in the Bombatorium to be sure (long day today and I'm in for the night).

The drum is a Japanese toxic red candle, large size. Red indicates a DA/DC filling. This one was self ejecting, prop it up on it's two legs and fire it downrange.

Are you referring to the 7&8th photos?

Yes i was Jeff, i thought it was some kind of Booby trap as it is excatly like a buckets for grease that i use hear, the lid the bend in the top all the same,,,,, my mistake,,,,,, Dave

I'm sure the buckets had the same origin, but we used them for a number of candles - just another piece that until you have seen it - one of the great things about this collection.
