Ww1 13lb shell or is it?

Hi I picked this up about 10years back. Have been advised it's a 13lb ap shell. But some recently said the shell and fuse is unknown and may be some kind of experimental shell. (I'm.ni expert and just trying to work out what I got) Wondered what people thought of it and can anyone offer any advice?

The Navy used the 13-Pdr gun, and with AP or semi-AP projectiles. I cannot read the stampings on your shell in the photos, but if the is a letter "N" stamped on it somewhere, that is probably what you have. If so, very nice! Have been after one for ages.

This round is mentioned in David Ibbetson's excellent series of books for the serious collector. It is a 13pr Common pointed shell using the standard 13pr case.

Very interesting, but maybe you should remove the paint and clear the markings next.
I think that would be most helpful and worthwhile.

The gun was known as "13 Pdr 6 Cwt QF Mk.V Naval Gun", and apparently there were about 650 of them made, and they were used on DEMS (Defensively Equipped Merchant Ships). There is a picture of one of these guns that is mounted on land in the North East of England.

I have a case that has a Naval Inspection/Acceptance stamp.

Hello Roger, The Ordnance Society has pictures of this rare gun (mounted on Vincent Pier, Scarborough) together with a little more info, in our National Artillery Survey. It's on the website in the drop down menu under ARTILLERY SURVEYS. Record No. 108. Regards, Trevor
