It looks very similar to a 40mm armour plate test projectile. These were fired at plate by means of an enormous air gun. Used, I believe, at RARDE Fort Halstead. I have a drawing, but not to hand.
I think there was an enclosed (tube) 400-500 m long special (then) RARDE-run test range facility on Foulness, but I had nothing to do with it. I just used to see it when driving past.
I think it was present on what was originally the rain fuze sensitively testing facility, which was used well before I worked there? The facility being a series of rain (precise sized water droplet) producing frames through which a fuzed, but inert projectile, was fired.
I've seen (worked on) larger 40/70-based special rounds for subscale APFSDS testing, but that's all.
Looks to be made of Tungsten, DU has a much darker lustre to it. Any DU armor piercing cores I’ve seen are a jet-black color or atleast a very dark, shiny finish to it.
