This is on loan to me from the Army. It was recovered from the wall of a house in DC last year. Originally it was beleived to be the George Keeling Hand Grenade, Patent # 2,299,904.
There is an entry for the item on Darryl's site in the "What is it" section:

I pulled the patent info and the Keeling grenade does not have a pull pin or the metal chain going through the body. Below are the pictures of the one that I have along with the referenced patent.
Any ideas?

Francesco has come up with a good identification on this, it appears to be a George Keeling patent grenade, patent number 2299904.
