Joe, they look like 8 of them. Seems this is a grenade which expells 8 smaller units which then cover a larger area and produce effect from more than one direction (likely with varying delay times) so attention is diverted even more.
Just my understanding from what I see.
I believe that EOD is correct with 8 ignition ports in a circular pattern and possibly an additional 1 in the center (Just from memory, I no longer have the grenade to check). The main fuze was a standard M201 Series Pyrotechnic with a "confidence" clip. The grenade(s) contained a bundle of cardboard tubes that were ejected from the body, each being a separate quick match fuzed diversionary / distraction charge. The Grenade Bodies were aluminum material. I did not take any measurements and was unable to determine at the time if this was a commercial or military production model.
