You could add the link to the website if you are not sure if you can use the photo. I know this is not a good idea for a picture book but it would be good research item in the book.

Request for permission to use images

As far as I’m concerned, if i choose to post any images on here/the wider internet or in the public domain in general, then i fully expect them to be downloaded/copied and shared. By posting, i accept i have no future control of them and accept that. If i don’t want others to have certain images, then i don’t post. Simple.

I have been making my own "encyclopedia" of grenades. So far, it's images saved on my computer and deactivated / replica examples.
I am VERY interested in your project and would help make it happen if that's possible.

First of all, I think it's pretty clear that I don't intend to publish anything without first seeking the appropriate authorization from the owners of the photos.
Secondly, for those who don't know, there is a provision in all copyright regulations called "obras huérfanas" in Spanish, regulated in Article 37 of Royal Legislative Decree 1/1996. This provision refers to works for which, after diligent action, it has not been possible to contact the author and establishes a series of conditions such that, if met, their use is legal even without prior authorization.
In the United States, the regulations merely acknowledge the problem but offer no solution, limiting the proposals to limiting the liability of those who use them after a diligent search for the author. An example is the Google Books case (Authors Guild v. Google, Inc.).
In the United Kingdom, the applicable regulation is the EU Orphan Works Directive, implemented by the Copyright and Rights in Performances (Certain Permitted Uses of Orphan Works) Regulations 2014 (SI 2014/2863), similar to the Spanish model.

I don't know. I've been working in this project for maybe three years and there is still a lot of info to analize. Maybe one/two years, but if the images problem become insoluble...
Is requesting permission to use an image only required when the future use of the image is for profit or other benefit? For example if someone wants to purchase or get information about an item, and he finds a picture of that example of item on the web, copies and pastes it so readers will know what he is after, is that a violation?
Each country has his own law but, in the case you expose, only to search something, I think it's legal to use an image. In Spain the law it's the
Real Decreto Legislativo 1/1996, and says the following:
Artículo 31. Reproducciones provisionales y copia privada.
1. No requerirán autorización del autor los actos de reproducción provisional a los que se refiere el artículo 18 que, además de carecer por sí mismos de una significación económica independiente, sean transitorios o accesorios y formen parte integrante y esencial de un proceso tecnológico y cuya única finalidad consista en facilitar bien una transmisión en red entre terceras partes por un intermediario, bien una utilización lícita, entendiendo por tal la autorizada por el autor o por la ley.
2. Sin perjuicio de la compensación equitativa prevista en el artículo 25, no necesita autorización del autor la reproducción, en cualquier soporte, sin asistencia de terceros, de obras ya divulgadas, cuando concurran simultáneamente las siguientes circunstancias, constitutivas del límite legal de copia privada:
a) Que se lleve a cabo por una persona física exclusivamente para su uso privado, no profesional ni empresarial, y sin fines directa ni indirectamente comerciales.
b) Que la reproducción se realice a partir de una fuente lícita y que no se vulneren las condiciones de acceso a la obra o prestación.
c) Que la copia obtenida no sea objeto de una utilización colectiva ni lucrativa, ni de distribución mediante precio.
3. Quedan excluidas de lo dispuesto en el anterior apartado:
a) Las reproducciones de obras que se hayan puesto a disposición del público conforme al artículo 20.2.i), de tal forma que cualquier persona pueda acceder a ellas desde el lugar y momento que elija, autorizándose, con arreglo a lo convenido por contrato, y, en su caso, mediante pago de precio, la reproducción de la obra.
b) Las bases de datos electrónicas.
c) Los programas de ordenador, en aplicación de la letra a) del artículo 99
