My unofficial lists do not list the 870. The nearest I have to an official publication is "British Bomb & Rocket Pistols and Fuzes 1914 - 2007" by David Andrews and Alan Swan. They make no mention of it either.
Found today a document from the Dutch Air Raid Service that after in the early morning of 16 september 1943 a 12,000 lb. HC Bomb had detonated in a canal some 2,2 km west of the German border there was a crater of 25 meter in diameter and the canal was at the spot 2,5 meter deeper than before the explosion. They found pieces of the bomb body and a part of a fuze with the markings No. F 870 MK I S.M.P. 8/43. The bomb was dropped by one of the Lancasters of 617 Squadron (the Dambusters) that had to attack the Dortmund-Ems canal at Ladbergen (Germany). This attack was operation GARLIC and was a disaster, the night before the operation was canceled during the flight and one of the Lancaster crashed in the North Sea. On the night from 15/16 september 5 of the 8 Lancasters did not return home. As mentioned above, the No. F 870 fuze was a converted No. 845 fuze with a delay of 30 seconds till 3 minutes after impact and probably special made for the low level attacks of the Dordmund-Ems canal.
The Germans made a drawing of the bomb and the fuze and first thought that the bomb was 9000 lb. (3 sections of each 3000 lb.).
Which factory is S.M.P. and did they also made the No. 845 fuze?
What is the meaning of the letter F before 870?
