I have attached pictures of one of the early friction primed 1.65" (42mm) Hotchkiss shells. The second picture shows the exterior and interior of the head. There is a single ignition hole in the center of the head. The interior shows the disc that acts as the seal when the powder charge is ignited, with its three large cutouts (appear as circular light colored areas) through which the fire from the primer is allowed into the case. The projectile is marked on the fuse with a BBH logo, and is stamped on its base HOTCHKISS PATENT. The side of the shell is marked HOTCHKISS PATENT PARIS along the edge of the sheet brass.
