m1913 German defensive discus grenade

It took me some time to find a good m1913 German defensive discus grenade as it is a pretty rare critter, far rarer than the m1915 offensive model. Before I found a complete original (one pictured on right) I had bought the shell halves for the grenade on ebay. I fashioned the tubes from wooden dowel rod, next was the end caps. I got into the wifes sewing box and found button covers that are just the right size. All in all I thing it came out good (one on left) and served as a fine display piece until I got the complete grenade a few months back..Dano

Looks great Dano...better raid the box and make a replacement cap for the original as well.I will dig mine out later,I think it has steel caps rather than alloy...cant remember.

box locked

Hi MG34nz, That lower missing cap broke to bits when I dropped the damn thing 2 days after it came in mail, i'll have to leave it as is because 1) I like it 2) The wife locked the sewing box and other crannies I used to raid for usable bits (she's on to me!). We just got back from "company" pig roast so we glutted on food and froth so I need to sign off 4 now. Dano

Hi Dano, dug out my Baby discus, and here she is, no alloy caps to be broken on this puppy. May be a later manufactured version?

1913 def discus turtle tick DISKUSHANDGRANATE

Wow, I had never seen the baby discus with the steel centerpiece before, now I see 2! I had no idea that such a piece existed as I thought all cores for the baby disc were alloy! I wonder if there is a different model designation, like maybe the steel cored one being the m1913na? Hmmmmm that gives me an idea, i'll be in the workshop for a few hours. Dano

more turtles

I just finished in workshop and found out 1 important fact, the steel guts from a '15 offensive disc will fit into the '13 shells. All that was required was a little shortening of the tubes. It may still be a "MUTT" but has all original parts now! I did have to sacrifice an m1915 off. discus, but have a source where I can get them cheap. Dano

discus

Thanks Paul and Dave for the kind words, There is a practice '13 defensive disc that is a one piece totally hollow casting.I have a pic of it somewhere but will have to dig it out. The other practice '13 defensive disc looks similar to regular version with alloy guts and all.. Dano

thanks

Thanks MG34NZ, I was out of flat black paint and only had gloss, so I will eventually tone it down a bit. Dano

Hollow m1913 practice defensive discus
