Just a little update to this thread with a few new cannon rounds i have recently added to the collection, a mixed bag of MG131/13 MG151/20 and 2cm MGFF.

Hi Chaps,

A couple of 3.7cm rounds from the Rheinmetall-Borsig BK3,7 for you to have a look at.

Left is a 3.7cm M-Gesch.Patr.18 L'spur mit Zerl. This round was used in the Bf110G2/R1 and G4/R1 in the anti bomber role. In common with all Minen rounds this thin walled projectile was designed to maximise blast effect and inflict maximum damage to airframes. The Pulk Zerstorers initially caused huge problems to unescorted B17 and B24's, but with the appearance of escorts the use of the Bf110 in this role became untenable due to huge losses.

Right is a tungsten cored (APCR) Hartkern round used in the BK3,7 on Hs129B, Ju88P and mounted in pairs on the Ju87G. Despite shortages of tungsten towards the end of the war this loading was kept in production until the close of hostilities. Testament to the effectiveness of the BK3,7 armed Ju87 kanonenvogel.

Gents, Sorry to hijack the thread. I'm a volunteer at an air museum and we are refreshing our displays for next season and are looking for a single example of a German 20mm aircraft shell to show the comparison to a British .303. Can anyone kindly point us in the right direction on where we can purchase one of these please?

What period are you talking about?

If it's the Battle of Britain, you need a 20x80RB for the MG-FF, preferably with an M-Geschoss HE shell.

If it's later in the war, then a 20x82 for the MG 151/20 would be more appropriate (although by then you should be comparing it with the 20x110 Hispano rather than the .303" - that compares with the 7.92x57, the Luftwaffe equivalent).

Thanks for the reply Tony. It's a cannon round from a 1943/44 German night fighter that we are looking for to compare it against the standard .303 round of a Lancaster.

By 1943/44 the MG-FF had been largely replaced by the MG 151/20 in most applications - except one, in upward-firing Schrge Musik installations in night fighters, so either the 20x80RB or the 20x82 would be appropriate.

Then you will need as Tony has mentioned a Brgr.44 oZerl with a AZ9501 fuze, for use in the upward-firing Schrge Musik installations. See post 35 in this thread for some pictures. Not one of the cheapest or easiest to find though,

This is the dim tracer used in German night hunters during WW2.

The normal dimtracer has a 5 mm black tip. The “V” round an additional green stripe 10 mm around the bullet.

The “V”(verbessert) cartridge was loaded with nitropenta powder instead the normal rifle powder.

The 5 and 7,5 cm Bk used only brass plated cases with the C 22 electric primer instead of the C 12 primer.
