Comet 77mm

An early example of a 77mm cartridge as used on the Comet tank.......I believe.
77 x 440R.
Nice Vickers Armstrong stampings, no primer though.

Remember getting this at a booty on the August Bank Holiday that Princess Diana's death was on everybody's car radio. Chap picked it up and upon being told the price was3 promptly put it down, two old dears between it and myself almost went down as I lunged at it.

Correct - the Comet was the only user of the 77mm AFAIK, the gun was only devised because the 17 pdr (which used the same projectiles, including the APDS) was too big to fit in the turret. The 77mm cartridge case was based on the WW1-era 3 inch 20 cwt AA gun's, but was loaded to a significantly highly pressure.

Yes it is 420mm case length. All these 77mm cases seem hard to find.
I only have VAEL 1944 LOT 155 CR
ECC 1948 LOT 46 cut and overstamped as a MK 10 A/S MORTAR which is a shame.

Also I note MK 1 cases:
VAEL 1944 LOT 96 CR
RLB 1944 LOT 133 CR

If the 77mm was a hotter load than the 3" 20 CWT are all the CR loads weaker for Practice firing?.

Hi thank you ron3350 and pzgr40 for your informations

Then 440 mm as said cestrialad was a mistake .
This comet case is difficult to find. I have Never found.
Regards.

I was very lucky, a collector placed it on the Dutch collectors forum " Brittish shellcase for sale, 30 euro's". I was as lucky to be the first one to react.
