25-Pdr Incendiary

Hi All,

Have recently acquired a 25-Pdr Incendiary shell marked L16A1, also "Inert Instruct". It is empty. Can anyone tell me what bits should be inside such a shell, and their dimensions, please, as I would like to either obtain or make the missing parts. I have spent some time on the internet trying to find this information, but no luck so far!

Going by the stamped markings of the L16A1 incendiary in the above photo, the projectile shown is likely a base ejection design.

As 'sgdbdr' mentioned, the page excerpt from a UK ammunition pamphlet, is of bursting coloured smoke projectiles. The presumed L16A1 incendiary just happens to be the same L-number.

I guess someone needs to find some documentation that lists the L16A1 incendiary, proving of disproving its existence?
 
This is all I could find with L16A1 on it Sgdbdr the projectile in the drawing is indead a colored smoke.
Base is completly different.

Thanks for your help everyone. Yes, this appears to be a conversion from a BE Smoke Mk.6/1. Originally made by ROF Birtley in 3/56. That date has been barred-out, and RL 5/61 substituted. The only bit of the innards remaining is what I think is a pusher plate.

I look forward to seeing the X-ray.

Having studied the drawings of the pre "L" series BE smoke and Incendiary rounds, the only difference I could find is that on the incendiary round, the smoke pot is filled instead with an incendiary composition. I would imagine the "L" series BE smoke and Incendiary projectiles were all but identical other than the filling.

Regarding the 25pdr ammunition - Incendiary and coloured flare shells were developed but not introduced into service
 
As requested, herewith pictures of base. The screw-in part is stamped SX 588, and RL 4/61. The other piece (pusher plate?) has no markings.25-Pdr Incy. 3.jpg25-Pdr Incy base..jpg The small green label is simply my reference number.
Did this Incendiary shell type see service, or is it experimental?
 
If it was experimental, it would be "XL" not "L"

SX 588 is the drawing number of the item.
