Cutaway model of a Yugoslav M75 defensive grenade. The grenade was mainly used by the Serbian forces, which nicknamed the grenade “Kašika” which translates to spoon in English, most probably pointing out the relatively large spoon or lever on the grenade fuze.
The grenade body is manufactured by casting appr. 3000 steel balls with a diameter of ø2,5 to 3mm in a casting mold. The space between the balls is filled up with polyester resign, which is cast in the mold over the balls. The outside of this steel balls/polyester casting is clad with a black injection moulded PVC outer casing, so forming the body of the hand grenade. The grenade body is filled with 36 to 38 grams of Nitropenta-tetryl mixture.
The fuze is of the mouse trap type. When the split pin is withdrawn, the grenade is safe as long as the spoon is pressed against the body. As soon as the lever is released and flies of, the firing pin is flipped over 180 degrees by a wound up spring and hits the firing cap. The firing cap ignites a powder delay train (black) that ends up in the detonator. The detonator is crimped to the base of the fuze housing.
The effective kill radius of the grenade is 12 to 18 mtrs, the casualty radius is 30-54 mtrs.
The M75 has also been produced by Croatia end Macedonia where it is known as the M93 grenade.
