WWII Periscope No. 14

BOUGAINVILLE

Well-Known Member
Hi all :tinysmile_grin_t:,

Here is another recent acquisition. This time it is a WWII Trench Periscope No. 14 (14 Inch). The leather case is marked 1942.

It is in excellent condition except that the attachment that screws into the end of the wooden handle and then screws onto the base or the periscope is missing. I doubt if anyone would have a spare one for me or even a scale drawing so that I could get a replacement made. I would really appreciate it if anyone could help me out here.

Cheers,
BOUGAINVILLE

Hi, Interested in your post, I have 2 No.14 periscopes, neither of which are dated, one similar to yours (Ross No. 1088) with a leather covered tube in distressed leather case, and another all brass (Mk.4 O.S.1427 G.A. R&J B 9329), very heavy with a sunshade in a fibreboard case. which I assumed to be late ww2. I have just completed making the assembly which connects the handle to the scope, over two days work and a lot of machining/filing and I've still to make the handle. If you are still desperate for a sketch I could possibly supply. I don't suppose you have a spare case or know where there is one.
Regards, Cyclops

Hi Cyclops,

Yes I would really appreciate drawings of the brass assembly that connects the handle to the scope.

Unfortunately I don't know of any spare cases. The Periscope I have is the only one I have seen. Hence the request for drawing, measurements etc of the missing part.

Many thanks,
Cheers,

Hi Bougainville, I will try and do some sketches for you and then think about how I can get them to you, may take awile.

Regards Cyclops.

Hi Bougaineville, I've made a start, let me know if these are of use and I'll do some more if o.k. If not let me know your e mail address and I'll try it that way.

Hi Bougainville,
Found a bit more time for some more sketches. i had to use an old woodscrew for the part that screws into the handle as it's beyond my machinery and expertise to make it. If you find someone to make an accurate repro' please get one made for me. If you need any more info' let me know.

Hi Cyclops,

Many thanks for your assistance. I looks quite complex and quite a bit of lathe work. Now I know what I am up against and have something to show my mate for costings in reproducing the attachment.

Hi Bougainville,
I'm not sure if you managed to get a mount sorted for your 14 periscope. I have just acquired a case complete with handle and mounting,, so if you still need a mount drop me a line. A tatty leather case and handle is also available.
Regards, Cyclops.
