WW2 German Wood Bullets

Kilroy was Here

Well-Known Member
Hi, can some of the cartridge-bullets guys tell me exactly what I have here?

I know a little bit about headstamps, and see these are "St" steel case, 43,44,45 etc. year of mfg. and the 3 letter maker codes. What are the other numbers, lot numbers?

What are the wooden bullets for, training or rifle grenades maybe?
Are these original rounds?

Also more info on this 7.92x33 dummy or training bullet for the Mp43-Stg44 would be appreciated. I like this little silver bullet, I also have another on my key ring. They came from a friend in Latvia :tinysmile_grin_t:

Unfortunately I have to disappoint you.

The cartridges you are showing are home made. The cases were lacquered steel fires cases, probably rusty, and somebody make them shiny again. The person put a wooden bullet on them I cannot identify.

The MP44 round almost the same, a rusty original round, polished with a drilled hole in it.

The clip is made by Sellier & Bellot pre WW2.

For identify from left to right.

Platzpatrone 88
Platzpatrone 98 and MG (blue bullet)
Platzpatrone 27
Platzpatrone 33 with brass, CWS, CWS lacquered ands lacquered steel case.

Hello Dutch, thanks for info, no problem about wooden bullets, not disappointed at all, they were a gift, as was the MP44 bullet. I know I have read before about wooden bullets in WW2. I kind of wanted to know what were wooden bullets original purpose, training?

Again, thank you, but I maybe disagree about the MP44 bullet? It does not look like this MP44 round was ever a real one, it looks like it was made this way originally? It's similar to American "dummy" rounds I have that are one piece with a hole in them for easy identification as a dummy round.

Are you sure they never made dummy MP44 bullets for training, or for armorers to use to cycle weapons safely?

7.92mm Kurz

Original German werkzeug (inspection) rounds did not have a hole in the case.

Hi guys, OK, thanks for the info. It's good to know what they really are.
I appreciate the information, this forum and it's members are the best!!! :nerd:

ooops I Forgot, OK then the MP44 bullets were real rounds at one time, and were drilled and chrome? or nickel? plated by someone post wartime?

Original german 7,92x33 rounds have 4 holes, of 2mm in the case.
and one hole in the bullet, of 3 mm.

Know headstamps are ; aux 7,9 12 43, and hla 9 44(without a hole in the bullet.

source ; Die deutsche kurzpatrone 7,92x33 by Dr Dieter Kapell.

As the 7,92 Kurz rounds seem to have been unfired, and pulling the bullet easimy may break the rusty case I assume that they were drilled just to remove powder. This would not be the first time I see live rounds made inert this way.

Hi,

One illustrative and informative picture from the German handbook "Der Infanterist" dated 1924

the british used .303 training rounds in ww1 with wooden bullets in them, jsut chipping in lol sorry

Wood bulleted drill rounds were used not just in WWI, but also in WW2. The .303 inch Drill D Mark VIII was essentially the same as the Mark IV in WWI.

Care should be taken in using terms like "training round" as it is open to misinterpretation. It could mean a drill round (as you used it) or it could mean a live short range round. There is plenty of scope for error in terms like that.

Munfrosch - which Czech rounds do you mean. The only wood bulleted rounds I am aware of are blanks.
