WW2 German filling tool ... help needed

butterfly

HONOURED MEMBER RIP
I recently picked up a couple of funnels/tools and would like some help/suggestions in gaining a positive ID as to their use.

The first one has very clear markings on it S.D 2 which I had assumed to indicate its use for the SD2 butterfly bomb, however the photos had me a little puzzled. Sure enough when I got my hands on it my suspicions proved correct, in that the tube part which is inserted into the body is much too long for the SD2, the step from the threaded part to the smooth (fuze body) part is too great and indeed the thread looks much too course to fit the SD2. However, it does appear to fit the SD10C bomb very well........and the profile of the insert appears to match. So why the S.D 2 on the main body??? Maybe the full stop between the S and D is significant, anyone any ideas on this one? photos below (taken from sellers listing)

The next one is a total mystery. It is of much thinner construction and unlike others I have seen has no means or securing it to the item being filled. Any help on this one would also be appreciated. As a sense of scale the tube on this one is pretty much the same diameter as the S.D 2 one above.

Any further information surrounding these items would be much appreciated.

kind regards Kev

May be S.D2 stands for the measurement in the cup rather than what it fits ????????????????? Dave

Hi Dave, you may be right, and I still suspect the full stop is significant in this case. I do have an example of the SD1 filler (and have seen several others) which are marked SD1 on the funnel and as such I thought this too may indicate what it filled.
Another possibility is that the unit was modified for use with the SD10C - though if this were the case then I think the markings would have been removed.
I believe that these filling funnels originated from the Rechlin test range - though I have no provinance to back that up.

Maybe some German speaking members may be able to come up with some possibilities of abbreviations of S.D that may be of use?

thanks for your suggestion - I will see if I can find any relation to 2 in volume/size etc.... regards Kev

Ok, here are some approximate measurements for the two filling tools.... (I say approximate as they have been measured using a rule and not micrometer - so please +/- 1mm).

regards Kev

Thanks Kev, why aren't things ever simple!
Like you I was convinced that was an SD 2 filler funnel.
The screw thread on an SD 2 is more like 37mm so the 40mm on the funnel would be too big anyway.
Also the 32mm diameter piece would be a problem, if the bitumen or HE solidified to this diameter then the fuze wouldn't fit inside anyway.
Good luck with finding out what its for.
Dave.

All I can say is that it does screw into the SD 10C anti-personnel bomb and the profile of the inside portion looks very similar to that of the tool. Though I would be happier if someone else could confirm it. As for the filler with no means of securing I have no idea what thats from, it was listed as a SD10 filler, but who knows??

here is a diagram of the SD 10C bomb showing the profile.

I rotated it so you can see how similar the inner profile is to the tool
