WW2 Gas mask bag?

Hi all,

was given this bag along with a lightweight gas mask bag, 2 37 large packs and some WW1 binos over the weekend but not sure about it.

It measures 11'' by 10'' by 3''marked inside RMA, dated 1941 with a V1.
It has a canvas carrying strap, 3 compartments inside plus a double document flap on the rear. A couple of small 'D' rings on the front and a long piece of string attached to the bag. This is what makes me think its possibly a gas mask container.
Also has four well made brass studs marked N B Ltd. It is very much better made than 37 patt webbing, with virtually no wear and i wonder if this was the civilian version gas mask holder/bag?

Any ideas?

Andy

Looks to be the respirator bag used before the lightweight respirator and bag came along. normally worn on the chest. Early war use. Also seen being carried about by air raid wardens, police and the like.

Hello gothica7, yes its a respirator haversack Mk VI.

The respirator canister was stored in the right hand compartment and the facepiece in the left (the small loop in the bottom corner of this compartment held the anti dim outfit).
The full length compartment at the rear and the pouch at the front held the anti gas equipment.

Hi Guys,

many thanks for that both of you, i am very pleased to have had my thoughts confirmed. Its a very well made bag and i am wondering what use i can put it to. I reccon i will use it for all my collecting jars for the moths i cannot record when i empty the moth trap in the mornings. At least it will get some further use as i believe its been in a draw since the War.
