WW II UK Hidden explosive charge

While searching for a specific item, I came across this neat little explosive device. As the storey goes, the rat was trapped, skinned and then loaded up. It would be left behind for German troops taking over a house or other building.

And I thought Turd bomblets were a neat idea

A variation on the scene in "Hurt Locker"............
Dave.

I've also seen reference to the same trick being pulled with lumps of coal.

During an EOD licensing exercise one of my colleagues did a similar thing with a dead rabbit and detonated it in a room. The first policeman on the scene came out and immediately threw up. I guess the smell and the sight were a little too much. For bunny lovers (and that includes me) the rabbit was already dead and was found in the exercise area.

Charge Demolition Rat Mark I

Herewith a contemporary photograph showing construction. Charge Demolition Hippopotamus Mark I is the one to look out for.

The thinking behind this was to put stuffed Rattie in a pile of coal and then some unsuspecting soul loads him up in a nice boiler,, job done....... Dave

Regarding this thread, I first assumed an early april joke.
Bah, what a disgusting charge.
An enourmous effort to prepare this 'device' properly with a time fuze (?) only to mess up a room - still can't believe it.

I seem to remember the booby trapped rat being used in the movie The guns of Navarone. Cheers

millsbomber - whar pub did you get the info from? I only had the pic and a couple sentences. thanks

and yes it was in the Guns of Navarone, when I firstr saw it I remembered that scene, but then when I looked further and found a WW II reference to it

It is shown in the S.O.E. catalogue: Descriptive Catalogue Of Special Devices And Supplies, Vol. II.
The catalogue has been reprinted by Mark Seeman in his book: Secret Agents Handbook of Special Devices and the rat can be found on page #197.

This is a wartime photograph of the SOE workshop where camouflaged charges were prepared. This shows just a few of the container variations. Happy to answer questions on the items.
