I have seen a pic of a stick-type with black elongated-egg shaped head/body, seemingly not much changed from WW2/Vietnam War type but surely they've moved on design-wise??

Don't know what is new and current. what is on Lex's site is what we were picking up in the Gulf War 20 years ago - and even then it was export stuff. The biggest difference then was the pre-fragmented bodies and that the stick was plastic.

It wouldn't surprise me a bit if the ChiComs still have several thousand of updated/improved stick grenades sitting in ware houses for their militia. During the Korean War the ChiComs fancied themselves as "excellent" grenade throwers, especially with the stick variety. Korea proved them to be "poor" throwers and not accurate enough. Just like the AK-47 selector switch which flipped to the first position is full auto is so that they can put down a wall of lead and not ave to duck under cover while attacking. Thus, they would use their grenades in the same matter; Just keep on throwing them towards us and we will keep are heads down during their mass assaults.

On the other hand the US grenades could what they called frost lock in the mechanism (Bouchon igniters) which not allow the firing pin to completely make contact with the primer. Of course this was during the winter battles. On any other part of the year, they worked fine. JFYI.....

If I recall it right the latest known design was the Type 97 grenade but knowing the Chinese I would not be surprised if there are half a doozen follow up models by now.

While in the Gulf we used to set up impromptu ranges, test some fuzes off to the side and then throw everything we could get our hands on. RKG-3s, RGO-78s, RG-42s and the full range of Chinese available. The 82-2s had the worst dud rate of all. Not sure if it was improper storage or just poor manufacture.

interesting... you say in the Gulf - do you mean all these types were captured from Iraqi troops/found in ex-Iraqi stockpiles?

this could be one of those Chinese duds?

This should be Iranian (licence of German M-DN-11) if I am not misslead by proportion and appearance.

I'm not sure that the time-line matches up. You are talking about a period of over 20 years now, when did Germany develop, when was it copied, etc?

I was going to try and dig out some photos of grenades in the Gulf but ran out of time, instead here is a photo of my Chinese.

Jeff, the M-DN-21 (on top I miss-typed 11) must be older than that as I recall having them seen in some Jane's long agao (maybe someone could check on them if he has the whole series of "Infantry Weapons" and tell the earliest entry on them). Also all the German ones which turned up came from the machine building factory of Fritz Werner which was a state owned business which mainly distributed arms and ammunition manufacturing plants of which as we know quite some went to Iran and other countries.
