What is this?

Evening all,
This cropped up in an upcoming auction and the description stated:
U-Boat 74
128mm shell case and ring holder recovered from the wreck in Lyme Bay Dorset. U74

Apart from the standard recognizable case base - what exactly is this shell case with a ring holder etc?

Isn't that simply a cannister or what is left of it to protect the shell case?

Yes, it's a part of the package tube. Should be a 105 mm case

Lots of other munition related artifacts, deck guns, cannon balls, torpedo parts all being auctioned 6th - 8th. November in Penzance. Looks like the Charlestown shipwreck museum is closing down.
i’ll be in Cornwall at the end of November should anyone living near Wimborne win anything and want it brought back to Dorset - but only if it’s small items and the auctioneers is prepared to keep them until the end of the month for you. I can’t fit any of these guns in the car!

So is the case still in the tube and crushed in?

No, there is no tube. It's just a crushed case with a brass ring of the tube on which the tubes closing cap was fixed. Here's a picture of this brass ring but with the complete closing cap attached. Sorry I don't have a complete tube and I also don't remember that I have ever seen one. Like the closing cap the tube was most likely made from thick zinc sheet metal. The Zinc parts may have been dissolved in the salt water.
