What do you think more smoke up the ass

Ordman, it is the nose piece (magnesium) off of a tungsten APDS projectile (U.S.) from a 105mm tank projectile. And yes, it could have been fired by an older Abrams tank with a 105mm gun, but it isn't part of the sabot, it is part of the penetrator assembly. That older APDS stuff was Vietnam era. The Abrams tanks with 105mm guns that went to the first Gulf War were issued DU APFSDS-T ammo, not that older stuff.

I personally always want to bitch-slap these morons that mislabel ordnance on ebay and gunbroker.

Fellow
The gent sent the following pictures
I would like to let him know exactly what he has
The Black paint job and red ring is what is throwing me off
(U.S. used a series of red T's to indicate tracer)
I do know that it is a composit APDS round minus the lower housing
was not sure if it was a US (M392 series) by what he has on e-bay
definitly not a 120MM. Positive ID would be appreciated
(Could this be Canadian?)

ThanksDSC06439.jpgDSC06436.jpgDSC06437.jpg

Well, he seems to be missing the pot part of the Sabot.

If you check my photos here:

http://www.bocn.co.uk/vbforum/threads/76540-M728-105-mm-apds-t?highlight=M392

You will see that the M728 projo I have has the same manufacturers code on the magnesium cover for the penetrator. There are some other APDS projos shown on BOCN, and the UK ones seem to have a rounded nose on the WC penetrator. The ones this guy shows are pointed like the U.S. design.

Thanks hazord
Can I forward your pics to him?
I sent a few that I had and the data sheet from the TM
Guys alright just need to be set right as to what he had.

For UK Markings Armour Defeating Ammo body colour is black. UK/Commonwealth used to use a red ring to identify an active (energetic) content. In this case the Tracer. Red rings disappeared with the advent of NATO standard markings
