US gun range accident: Girl, nine, kills instructor

". . .a high-powered submachine gun."

There but for the grace. . .

Being a gun guy at heart, this kind of reporting leaves me speechless.

Yesterday I met a couple who are soon to emigrate to the USA. They will not encourage or allow their children to use weapons but are pragmatic enough to want their children to be trained to make a firearm safe. This is because they recognise that their children will no doubt make friends with other children and visit those other children in their homes. The idea is that if they see an unattended weapon they may be able to check it and make it safe.

the NRA has a gun safety program for children. The first part is for the child who comes upon a fire arm is to stay away and call an adult. Fair enough, but so many adults are dolts when it comes to fire arm knowledge, but it is a good start. I remember the private who found a"dud" mortar round, picked it up and told the fleeing crowd, "This is the fuze which sets it of " and proceeded to poud the fuze with his fist. The result was he became instant taco meat. They live amongst us.

Having been a battalion and brigade marksmanship coordinator/trainer/range NCOIC, I have seen quite a number of stupid actions, and prevented a few.........but this dumbfounds me. The yahoo that thought a nine year old could, and would handle a fully automatic UZI without being RIGHT ON TOP OF HER, should have never been allowed on the range himself. Its a good thing to teach the young. I taught my daughter to fire my Colt SAA at age six, but I was right there watching EVERYTHING SHE DID. You NEVER get complacent on a range.......you don't trust ANYONE.

There's an old adage the Army pounded into our heads...."Stay alert, stay alive." Unfortunately, some people never learn this.
