US Bomb found in Normandy

Thats very interesting was it this weekends news i cannot see the date, i wonder if its usual practice to defuze it above ground ?

Many thanks its interesting to know they are still found today

This is pretty common in France. A little while ago in Rouen the authorities found an unexploded US Bomb under a pavement (sidewalk) close to the harbour and in the middle of some social housing. A few weeks before I had walked over the exact spot.

Earlier this year two bombs were found near St Valery Sur Somme and were exploded out on the sands near the low tide mark. The French EOD guys are very experienced.

Hey Steve,

What makes you think it was defuzed above ground ?
I must admit I am not in any way fluent at he French language, but I couldn't make that out in the article.

greetz,

Menno.

Hi Menno
Looking at the pictures , there appears to be a Wrench on the fuze , it could be that it was staged for the press.

Hi Menno
Your right when i increased the size of the picture you are right it does look like a lifting eye

Hey Steve,

In a way you are right as well, about this beast being defuzed above ground.
It looks as iff it was found in some dig at a building site where much earth has been removed. It would not have been possible to lower the thing into the ground even deeper.

greetz,

Menno.

The lifting eye in the photo looks to be the type used on Artillery projos when they are shipped vertically on a pallet. The U.S. WWII bomb fuze thread size is the same 2 inch thread used on U.S. artillery projectiles, so the artillery plugs make good lifting rings and hole plugs for bombs.

Hi

The last photos before destruction
