Unknown shell casing. Possibly WW1

Guys,

I got given these by a relative who was clearing out their loft and found these, they think they were made by her grandfather during the 1st World War but she cant remember if this is correct or not.

The are a pair of 'bells' made from brass shell casings, diameters are 10cm long and 4.5cm wide, they dont appear to taper at all. I am unsure whether they are in their original length or have been cut down - they dont look cut down though.

They have a removable, screw in plug in the bottom with 4 small holes in it to unscrew it and a large hole in the middle presumably for some sort of charge.

They are both marked on the rim with 'B&S' one of the removable plugs has a 'V' stamped in it, its definately a 'V' not a broad arrow. the other baseplug is blank.

There are no other markings, and both casings are identical.

My questions are
a) what are these shell casings?
b) what era are they?
c) what component went in the hole in the base?
d) what projectile went in the casing?
e) what gun would the have been fired from?

Sorry for the questions, but i would like to make one of the as close to original as possible and the other keep as a bell (this is because on of the wooden pieces is broken)
