Hello people,

Been a while since I have been on, mainly due to me being out of the game so to speak for a while. Im slowly coming back into it, so have something for your expert eyes to check out for me.

Its made of alloy, around 11cm tall, 6.5cm dia at base, large circular part 8cm dia. I was thinking part of some kind of Sabot round????

Over to you......

Cheers,

Clive.:smile:P6054692.jpgP6054693.jpgP6054694.jpg

I was gathering as came in a batch of ordnance. Why what are your thoughts on it?

Nothing in particular, but as a sabot, for that diameter you would expect a larger cavity for a dart, and there would have to be a method for the sabot to break away. From what I see in the photos this piece does not look typical of most sabots in either regard.

In addition, for it's size and shape if it was intended to go down a gun barrel for some other purpose I would probably expect another point of contact (8cm dia) to make it stable for some other use. Not being typical of most sabots and not having a stable basis without being a sabot, it makes me wonder why it was associated with ordnance. What else was in the "batch" it was found in?

Hi again,
It was in a batch of various pieces of ordnance and ordnance related pieces. For example, 40mm practice grenades, A container for a simulator projectile airburst chemical agent, No69 grenade bottom halves and a 105 percussion cap protector. I see what you mean about the sabot, Wrong path there.

Just spoken with the guy I purchased it from. It seems like it came from a RAF training place near Kinloss. Poss an aircraft part not Ordnance.

I have the exact same thing came from a training range, I haven't managed to figure out what it is either.

How interesting, can you post a pic? Any idea how old the range is and who used it?

It almost looks like the bottom half of some kind of german squeeze bore projectile, but it cant be. Interesting. Maybe if you look through some experimental British ordnance you might find something.

If ordnance - - - I'd be looking at proof slugs. Take photo 1 and make the top the base of the slug - but even then I'd be afraid of a wobble in the barrel. Wouldn't make sense at an AF base anyway.

Can't find it at the moment it's in the shed somewhere but it's exactly the same as yours. It's a REME vehical recovery range and dates back well before ww2. I have found piat parts. Carl gustav parts and 3.5" rocket parts down the same range. I was thinking its possible part of a Carl gustav round but not sure.

I have just re read this thread and I think the one you have was actually mine and the collection of bits were mine originally. Is the simulated airburst got a black steel bottom with a green plastic coated card tube with a aluminium top cap. The 40mm prac rounds are the orange/red paint rounds. I'm positive these bits were mine and I must have sold the part I found down the range that's why I can't find it. I seem to remember there was some German stick ggrenade bases, mills plugs ect in the lot I sold. Email me if you want I would be interested to find out where you got them from cheers rob ( robertallison88@hotmail.com)
