Unknown Item please help

Need help identifying this item.

Diameter is 98mm Length without the parachute is 188mm The interior diameter (where the spring is) is 80mm

There are holes for shear pins on both ends.

My assumptions

1. this item is fairly modern
2. this item is ejected from another piece of ordnance
3. this item ejects something using the spring
4. the parachute is too small to suspend this item (like a illumination candle) so it must be to slow it down or orient it vertically

I've got a couple of pieces that are very similar, not sure if the size is the same or not. Don't remember what they were for, but I believe it was pyro, a flare or something similar. The chute was to extract the package from the carrier, the spring then gave separation. If I recall correctly mine was picked up on Ft. Irwin in the mid 90s.

Do you remember if it was fired or aircraft delivered? It has absolutely no markings

If I get a chance I'll dig around for one of mine tonight and take a look. Don't remember offhand, a lot of off the wall stuff was showing up around then and it would be easy to get it mixed up.

Here is mine. Same size and appearance, no markings. Slight ammendment to the discovery location. This one came from a scrap yard in Fontana CA in 1997. Scrap dealer had purchased 5000 tons of ordnance scrap from Ft. Irwin, 29 Palms and China Lake. Based on its location in the yards and other items that it was found with, I believe it came from Irwin. Could have been either of the others as well.
