It's a fuze for a British WW2 4.5" anti aircraft shell , I think , but I can't remember the number . It would have had a conical tip with graduations on it . Hope this helps .

Thanks everyone. It's a No209 II as I've compared it to some pictures on the web and after a closer look I've found some remnants of the '209 II' marking. For some reason I thought it was more modern. Presumably metal detectorists find these regularly?

Yes , the SE of England would have been ankle deep in them during the war . We used to find loads of them when I did metal detecting [by permission] many , many years ago .
