Unknown 4.5 cases and 4.5 dummy

My mate Ron has these 4.5 cases and a 4.5 dummy that he wants to find some information on, as he has been unable to find anything on them so far. One case and the dummy are Australian made (ADI case, MBO dummy) and one case is British (RLB Birtley).
The usual 4.5 case (for MKS 3-5 GUNS) is 114 x 640R, is separately loaded and has the mouth screwed for a metal or plastic lid plug. These brass cases have full necks and are 114 x 693R (RLB) and 114 x 698R (ADI). These longer cases do not seem to be allowing for extra metal before threading the mouth, but appear to be a fixed version of the 4.5 Mk 3-5 case. i.e. Interestingly the fired British RLB case has crimps in the neck indicating a fixed round. As a fixed round this would be very heavy and probably required mechanically assisted loading, indicating Naval use.

1. Wood and steel dummy

640/644mm overall length, 465mm to shoulder. Finger/grab cut-outs at base.
Lightly etched into base:

MBO 3/1960
INO No. 61205 A
REPRESENTATIVE CASE & LID WJD (?)
No. 1

MBO = Ordnance Factory Bendigo, Vic (now Thales).
Appears to be for a 4.5 Mk 3-5 Gun, but how is this dummy used? Is it possibly a packing/container gauge, or is it a drill round?

2. British 114 x 693R case (4.5 fixed round?)

Headstamp: 4.5 14051 -06 RLB 5/86 232

Primer:

N44 MK3 BN028 85
OOO
GD 1085 421 AA

What is this round and which gun was it used in?

3. Australian 114 x 698R case.

Ron has 2 of these cases and they are new/unused, with no primers (or mouth crimps).

Headstamps:
4.5 IA 4.5 IA
T598/100021 T598/100021
ADI 0206 004 ADI 1005 002

ADI = Australian Defence Industries, Benalla, Vic.

What is 4.5 IA? T598/100021 is the same on both cases is this a gun or case designation?
Is 0206 004 Feb 2006, Lot 4 and 1005 002 Oct 2005, Lot 2?

Any information on these cases, the guns or ships appreciated. Cheers.

Darkman,

On the British case the primer is a naval one - N44
The three interlocked circles denote that it has a 'Unified thread'
Filled ROF - Glascoed - October 1985.

The later 4.5" turrets were unmanned, remote controlled, which one would assume required fixed ammunition.

See - http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNBR_45-55_mk8.htm

Are there any other markings on the British case?

Radioman1 used to fill these, so he should be able to shed a bit more light on the British case.

Thanks Tim.

The only other mark on the head of the RLB case is an inspector's mark - 119.

Cheers,

Graeme

Graeme,

In respect of the British made case, I wonder if it might be an export order.
