Unidentified Shell Base Primer Protector

Tullybane

New Member
Hi Everyone,

Firstly I am new to the forum so if this in in the wrong section my apologies.

I collect WW1 era fuses and shells but I'm not an expert and I'm leaning a little bit more every day.

I came across this shell primer protector amongst a small lot of WW1 fuses I bought several months ago but I have never been able to identify it.

It is made from brass and measures 137mm by 131mm. It is stamped No 50 Mk 1 on one arm and BMC 66 on the other side with the remnants of red paint.

I do not think it is WW1 related but could be wrong I honestly have no idea.

Any help in identifying it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank-you

Shaun

I have listed it as for a 105mm gun, possibly the light field gun 105x326R? I just listed it as 105mm. We need confirmation.

Hi Ron,

Cheers, hopefully someone can confirm either way, its been really annoying me for some time now not knowing what it was issued for.

No50 Mk1.jpgNo50 Mk1 b.jpgHere is two photos from this forum on No50 Mk1 clips. 1966 dated so not many choices for the cartridge that used them.
There is a good group of these clips if you type primer protection clips into the search.

Clip Cartridge No.50 Mk1, Pt. No. RW305 is used with Cartridges 105mm SP Gun Mks 1 and 2 systems for the Abbott.

Thanks AE501. I thought this was the correct case.
The Abbot SP gun uses the 105x 326R case with 4 mouth crimps to hold the cap.
The projectiles are rammed but the cases are manually inserted. Headstamped 105mm FD .
