Hi there,
On a archaeological excavation of a couple of 25 pdr gun sites near Oosterhout, Gelderland, the Netherlands, we found, among lots of other stuff, two types of fuze-covers. Both are made of iron, are covered in yellow paint and have a rubber ring on the inside. I know these covers were used for timefuzes, but why the different types? If they were used to aid identification in the dark, as i read somewhere on BOCN, what could they have indicated? Were the covers used for different kind of fuzes? The smooth cover has the number 222 painted on it, so i assume it was used for a fuze type 222, the other one has only "CY" painted on it (manufacturer code?). Rust has obliterated any other possible text.
Any information would be welcome,
regards,
Alfred
