Tobruk War Cemetery 1961

AE501

HONOURED MEMBER RIP
I jumped into Libya at Martuba DZ on Exercise Solinus 1 in 1961.
I scrounged a lift on a supply truck, to the cemetery, but was told I had to be outside again by a certain time, which I was not going to miss.
King Idris was still on the throne at this time.
I do not know what condition it is in now.
I did consider putting this in 'Places to Visit', but decided against it.
There were memorials to Australians and Poles, also there was a large place that looked like an ossuary for the Germans.
There were a fantastic number of graves for Royal Army Service Corps drivers, because if the Me 109s found them, there was nowhere to run to.

The CWGC states that there is a major renovation programme planned due to damage caused by the harsh climate. There is no mention of desecration, which the Benghazi cemetary recently suffered.
There is a German Military Cemetery, built in the shape of an old fort, which is about 1.5 km NNE to the CWGC site. 6026 German war casualties are buried there, many reburied there in 1951-1953 from various war graves and cemeteries in Libya.

A couple of years ago there was a posting on this forum with a link to youtube, where one of the so-called Arab Spring fighters filmed himself and his mates smashing headstones and the cross of sacrifice in one of the allied war cemeteries in Libya. Where they found the grave of a British Jewish soldier you simply heard the word `Israeli' and that got the same treatment. If the climate is harsh, the criticism is harsher. One of my father's cousins, who died in 1949, is buried in one of those cemeteries.
