2 old Thunderflashes here from my odds and ends. Nothing has changed in the design much over the years.

Happy memories from my TA days, the officer using the outside toilet at Pirbright didnt think so

I remember putting out the Sgts fire out with one, well, not putting it out exactly, but spreading it around rather a lot. They wernt very complimentary towards me.

Andy

In the mid 80s I had to do an emergency proof on 200 of the same batch key identity (lot number) after somebody was injured by a Mk 8. The claim was that it went off prematurely. None of my sample did.

And the thunderflash underneath a mk IV Turtle Helmet rivaled NASAs first attempt to launch something into space.

L29A1 SIMULATOR,BATTLE NOISE,ELECTRIC,LARGE. long winded way of saying thunderflash, current issue and great fun wiring several together!!!!
Cheers
Tony

i remember seeing this demonstrated ,apart from been a good way of showing what power the thunderflash had if misused it was pretty impressive the heights the helmet reached
"crate of beer for whoever caught the helmet"
didnt see many rushing to try and catch it

Am I right in thinking this was featured in the training film "The Stupidity Factor"?
Which from all accounts just gave squaddies more ideas.

I can see it now:-
"Lets show these blokes what sticking a Thunderflash under a helmet does, that way they won't be tempted to try it." Yeah, right
(I still wanna see a copy of this if anyone has it!!)

Attached to the flush of a toilet system was always funny. I forget which mk's we used to use, if i remember it was the no8 that blew the system off the wall ! lol The other ones whichever they were just forced the water through the system, soaking the poor chap that had just flushed.

I dont think that there is any other piece of explosive hardware that has heaped so much fun, pain, and damage on the British Army in equal ammounts.

I recall investigating accidents around the world involving the mis-use of thunderflashes - feel a book coming on - 101 things to do with a Thunderflash (apart from its intended use).

yes,i once saw 'thunderflash' mis-use by an army pal about 25 years ago outside a pub in my local town...I swear the ground shook! :p

best

Putting poo in the end was not a good ideal, so my dad said. he also told me that you could also fire them off an L1A1 SLR flash eliminator with a blank round to get better distance. Not that he did such a thing as that was illegal and non professional.

Read this one in reference to ExAt808s previous post re accidents :)

Stuffing the hollow end with wet mud immediately before striking helped to increase the throwing range......so I was told.

Thunderflash

Here is a picture of the Canadian version of the Thunderflash and the Signal Diver Recall. The Signal Diver Recall is virtually the same as the Thunderflash, except that the handle is filled with inert ballast to allow it to sink in the water.

Rumor has it that filling the Thunderflash handle with powdered creamer as found in the ration packs would increase the flash and make quite a spectacle at night.
