"A suspected explosive device has been discovered in the BOOT of a car in a quiet residential close. The bomb - thought to date from the Second World War - was found in a car parked in St Mary’s Close, Gravesend, by a member of the public."
A member of the public? Looking into the boot of a strangers car ? You'd have to pick the lock or smash the rear window. What happened to the famous Brittish decency?
Something very similar has happened here in town just a short while ago. The main road through town was closed in one direction for many hours and I had to make a detour of a few miles to get home. A few police cars and fire-brigade trucks, all with personnel had work for more than half a day. At what cost ? Later on I heard that a person went to an antique shop situated at the main road and wanted to sell some items he inherited from an old man that had died. Among this items was a hand grenade which the antique dealer thought was live and deposited it in the boot of his car parked on a side road. The dealer himself called the police. I suspect that the hand grenade was not live, because there were no follow up reports after this first great scare.
Kinda same story in the Netherlands. Had the shell for over thirty years untill someone popped up the one million dollar question; "is it inert ?" Ehhhh......
Looks like something of a Brittish WW1 4,5" howitzer shrappnell shell on first glance:
This is why I make sure any items are covered and in boxes when it is necessary to transport them in public.
They also remain covered on the trip between the car and house. Another collector once visited to pick up a 6 Pounder anti-tank case. I said that they should cover it before it was carried outside. They thought I was being paranoid, but you can't be too careful these days.
There was a similar case recently of a celebrity leaving a deactivated M16 on a table in their house. They hadn't considered that it could be easily seen through the window from the street. Someone saw it and called the police.
