Hi Pete,Thanks for posting those interesting pics,in first pic there is what seems to be a cog and chain arrangement made from old bike frames,from the way the chains are set up it looks to be high geared,perhaps a blower fan,?

I wonder if it is an improvised fan to supply air to dugouts/tunnels or perhaps even a forge,it looks a bity battle scarred,
