SLICS 2012 haul, plus some

Slick

Well-Known Member
So, just got back from the trip to St. Looey. A 4 day venture that included travel to other parts of the state. Almost a thousand miles driving. Anyway, had some parcels waiting for me when I got home, as well. A MAJOR treat, to say the least. Here are some pics of the lot.

To those of you who are "involved" with some of these items, I'll be emailing later. Note the majority of rounds are dummies. That's 'cause the "real" ones have officially exceeded my price range and I'm having to resort to acquiring the "accurate but fake" ones. I delude myself by considering they made fewer of the fake ones, so they'll be worth more. Some day. I hope. The torpedo gyro is, bar none, the finest addition to a certain collection. Have aspired to one of these for a long time. This one is complete in every way. Way, way cool. The rocket assortments were acquired, as usual, from BOOMLAND, the largest fireworks sellin' place in the universe. That's about a years supply, unless some special event requires a few extra shots, but I husband them as best I can. 2, maybe 3 shots per urge. Don't be jealous.

And here I am stuck in 'Jersey on a job at Picatinny. Maybe someday....:tinysmile_angry_t:.

P.S. Thank you, Rick!!! Package arrived but it'll be a month and a half or so before I can get back to open it:tinysmile_cry_t4:.

I feel soooooooo sorry for you. Stuck in Picatinny. I should be so unlucky.

I believe the Type 91. It's designated as a Type 91 Mod 3. Other than that, I know nothing about them.

Hi Rick,Very nice selection there especially the gyro, that piece must be like hens teeth, well done
Regards,
Don,

Here's an interesting page out of a TM on the pictured gyro.

Rick,
nice Mk-79 MOD 0 flares. Good hit on that one. They are getting rarer because of the replacement by the "M-201 (A/P 25S-5A). Did they come with the plastic zip-lock cover? Also, I cannot read the labeling on that long box in picture number 8?

One other item on the Gyro is it powered by electricity or possibly by something else? If it is electric do you think you will eventually hook it up with a plug and watch the action? That would really be neat!

Hi Mark,

It is powered by compressed air - if you look closely at Rick's photo, you will see the "cut-out" grooves on the circumference of the gyro ball - the idea is that normally some type of mechanical movement limiter initially restricts the gyro's to allow the compress air flow on the cut-out grooves to spin the gyro up to operating revs, then "releases" the limiter to permit full axis movement.

If you search BOCN, there's a previous thread I started on a German Torpedo gyro.

Cheers Buddy!

BTW - Yes you can spin then up using compress-air from say a scuba tank etc - absolutely an amazing feeling when you try to move it!!!

Some time back, on the IAA discussion board, the torpedo gyro expert there posted a video of his using air to spin up one of his Japanese gyros. An impressive, and somewhat noisy, display. Screamed, is a good description of the sound. I spun this one by hand and it took a while for it to stop. An amazing piece of engineering.

The flare kit came as it is. Was not aware there was a cover for them.

The long box in pic #8 is labeled:

QUANTITY 10
LINK, METALLIC BELT, 20mm, M8-E1
DRG. No. D-7238242

FOR USE ON 20mm M2 TYPE MECHANISMS
UNION HARDWARE COMPANY
TORRINGTON, CONN.

CONTRACT No. DA-19-059-ORD-40

Yet another addition to my boxed links collection.

Sweet gyro, Rick! Be careful spinning Japanese torpedo gyroscopes with your fingers. The air buckets often have extremely sharp top edges. The first time I tried using my thumb to spin one it filleted a good portion of my thumb. There was blood and skin on the wall :) . For months, I had no thumb print. One of those learning curves you only do once. Now I just use the air compressor.
