Russian rocket flare

Well-Known Member
What is the correct designation of this "Russian Rocket Flare" in this expired listing on Specialist Auctions?

http://www.specialistauctions.com/auctiondetails.php?id=1405793

Also, what does the Cyrillic text on the side read? It is difficult to see in the photo but I'm sure someone here is familiar with these.

Could someone please post a diagram of the internal construction if they have one?

Thanks for any info.

"30mm rocket flare cartidge" (in normal language just a 30mm flare). Marking gives lot-# and says "single red star".

Thanks for that EOD.

I know someone who has some live ones of these. Self contained projectile flares are legal in the UK, they are classed as fireworks. Anyone over 18 can walk into a Boating supply shop and buy them. They can also be ordered online. For example here:

http://www.safety-marine.co.uk/distress-flares/default.htm?s11-

They are interested to know with these particular Russian ones if they will be burnt out before landing. This is so they will not unintentionally cause any fires.

Here are four model of 30 mm russian hand flare.

Hi Falcon,
do you know if this law applies to our rocket flares as they have rifling in the tube?

Cheers
Tony

Tony, these flares go up a long way the 'motor' has three vents to make it rotate. Have used loads and never had one come down burning! Wear a hat when launching though...good blow back!! atb m

Thanks for the diagrams Stecol.

I believe you can buy the same type of flares that are issued to British forces from Pains Wessex. I believe the civilian models are in red plastic instead of OD tubes.

As to whether they have rifling in the tubes I'm not sure.

Hi Falcon,
yes they do have rifling in the tubes(and make great spud guns:xd:) and was the reason I asked if they are still legal to have.
Hi 6.5MS,
They are better than ours then, often the cause of fires in my neck of the woods!

Cheers

Be carefull with the Russian ones. The lower metal sections where one hand is located when fired tend to bild up high pressures when the projectile is stuck (expired shelf life of pyrotchenic composition since hygroscopic). Not always they manage to stay in one piece and rupture then under high pressure. Caused loss of fingers/hands in many cases.
I assume this is the reason why western counterparts are made of plastic which will rupture at lower pressures already.

I had about 10 different models of Russian flares (live) which had been given to me. Though kept in a temperature controlled environment, after 6-8 years all were showing signs of serious deterioration. Swelling, corrosion, exudation - in the end I took the entire group to the range for destruction. Think carefully before spending your hard earned money purchasing any live pyrotechnics for collection purposes, it does not age well.

Maybe I dodn't phrase that quite right. What I meant is that I'm nut sure whether or not the commercial flares are rifled.
