Hi Tony,

This was a special lot of Match ammo turned out by Radway Green for the Commonwealth Games in 2002. As the Full-Bore rifle events were held at Bisley, a few 20-rd full boxes were spare at the end, and were sold off by the NRA. Not rare, but not too common either.

Many thanks Roger,
so being non military, not my subject but something learnt none the less.
Cheers

I think the specification was exactly the same as the L42A1 Ball round with the 155 grain bullet, but being for such a high-profile event they were made very carefully from selected components to give the best accuracy, and the cases were given this special "commemorative" headstamp.

Roger.

Hi Roger,
was the L42A1 around in 2002? I have cases later than that still marked up as L2A2, 2005 being the earliest L42A1 I have come across.
Just for your interest/notes I have just come across two new 5.56mm cases this month, Swiss contract,T L22A1 (+) 09 with green annulus(tracer?)(ball being L21A1 with black annulus) and L15A1 RG 09 (+) with black annulus(AP?).

All the best
Tony

Hi Tony,

Yes, 2002 was the 1st year of issue of the L42A1 7.62mm Ball round. before that it had been headstamped "COMP" (short for Competition), but despite being issued for matches, and to the NRA, I think it was also issued to snipers. The L2A2 continued to be made and issued, but used the 144-grains bullet.

The 5.56 is interesting; never seen the L22A1, but the L15A1 has been around for a few years now, and the L21A1 started about 3 years ago, I think.

Regards,
Roger.

Hi Roger,
Thanks for the extra info,do you know the reason behind the black annulus on the L15A1?
The earliest Swiss 5.56 I have come across Headstamped L21A1 is 2006 before that they were being used with the 'normal' non L numbered Swiss headstamp but marked with the L number on the box,it would also seem we used a Swiss blank very briefly, but I have never come across one headstamped with a L number, these blanks shared a black annulus with the ball.

Cheers
Tony
