Remind me never to fly into Birmingham England

Birmingham Airport is fine, the conditions that day were exceptional.

I fly in and out of it all the time and the landings are like any other airport.

I would suggest you go to Dutch Harbour on a foggy day if you really want to experience a marginal airport.

Yeah, for sure. If you notice in the video, there are a few of the planes that abort the landing and take back off to try again.

Interesting..................correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears from the video that the airport has only the single runway?

If this is the case, perhaps they should be building a cross runway to battle the strong cross winds rather than extending.

Cheers

I think multi directional runways are a thing of the past as they are for heavy low powered piston engine aircraft that have to take off in to the wind.

I too thought it would be a safer alternative to have another runway for days when it is so gusty, the films show to good effect the strength of the airframe/undercarriage when you see flapping wings and one wheel landings, must cost a fortune in cleaning bills and replacing seat cushions,

Don,

Is that why the RAF are termed `crabs' by the army? I have been in and out of Birmingham airport a couple of times but with no dramas. Try Punta Gorda airport in Belize, where all you can see is trees to the sides and sea ahead, with a very steep descent, courtesy of Maya Airways (White Knuckle Airways, 1988). I kid you not, I thought we were running out of land to crash on. Their pilots must have had nerves of steel. I remember one take off from Belize City Airport and we could see a similar plane to ours upside down in the sea at the end of the runway. Not for the faint hearted. Or as a passenger in a Partenavia (very small) aircraft in Germany, with a full fuel load and a full complement of skydivers + pilot - forest to the sides and ahead, all the tops above the aircraft. S H One T, that was gripping! We can't have cleared the tree tops by more than about ten feet. The climb to altitude was always fun because of the relatively slow time that it took and the views on the way up; much slower than an Islander BN2T. This week I became aware of the death of former Red Devil and Falklands War veteran Chris Carroll, whose inquest determined accidental death after a parachuting accident in November 2013 in The Gambia. Basically he turned too close to the ground and paid the price, poor sod. Gravity is very unforgiving. RIP Chris and commiserations to your family, gone before your time.

Well it is obvious from the video that the current "modern" jet planes don't seem to handle strong cross winds very well do they? (There also a couple of the old propeller piston planes shown as well)

Isn't Takeoff 101 states that one should take off into the wind to gain the extra lift?

Beihan62 is correct, Sydney airport for one has cross runways for days of strong cross winds, and in addition speeds up the flight efficiency on days when both runways can be used - also plays a *KEY* safety role when a strong cross wind in encounter...............leave the joyride thrills to amusement parks.

On my recent trip to Vegas, we were delay by 3-4 hours at San Francisco due to strong cross winds at Las Vegas - while waiting, I was chatting with a Vegas local, who stated that this is the norm and the airport just "shut" until the winds subsides.

Cheers

Most propeller airccraft are turboprop and not piston engined and have been for a long while, as said it's probably an exceptional day and could be any airport/airfield in the world.

Andy :) i wouldn't have wanted to be in one of those aircraft either
