Hello,

I have attached 3 pictures of a Hotchkiss projectile, images 465b, 465b2 & 465b3. I have also attached 2 other images which several projectiles as additional source of information.

I have the following questions about the projectile in the images 465.

Where and by whom was this projectile stamped. Which country manufactured these and by which country where they used? (France)
Are the marks on top Japanese?

Thanks,

Jf

These are very early French made projectiles from approxamately 1880 or bit earlier. they were exported to many countries, and finding which one it might have been delivered to is probably impossible. The cases were usually spiral wound. but not always. GSpragge's pages which you have posted pretty much give the data.

It looks to me like a French Navy projectile 1881(2)-1887 vintage, but these were in service much longer maybe into ww1 for training if still serviceable. It was made by Hotchkiss in Paris. The marks on the top are perhaps inspection marks applied later on during it's life. These were made up to and after 1900 for any one, but the French Navy went to the Model 1888 double band style projectile in 1888 and stopped buying Hotchkiss projectiles.
