Question on shell marking

Hello,

Does anybody know the meaning of the symbol behind the letter R on the below picture? Is it the letter L? It's from a 13Pdr shell.

If it is on a British 13 Pdr then it is "RL", the code for Royal laboratory, Woolwich.
