The VGD Rifle Grenade Launcher
In many English texts the Dyakonov’s grenade launcher is referred to as the VGD Rifle Grenade Launcher.
I am at a loss as to where the letters VGD come from.
At best The V is related to the Russian ‘Винтовочная’ = Rifle
But the G and D do not seem to have relevance. I have not either seen any Russian texts/blogs using anything resembling a use of initials nor a specific name implying such initials as VGD.
My guess it derives for some concocted version of Ружейный гранатомёт системы Дьяконова. Or simply Ружейный гранатомёт Дьяконова = Dyakonov rifle grenade launcher, (Rifle grenade launcher Dyakonov, without the word system)
I am wondering is there a better explanation for using the letters VDG.
VDG would imply Rifle Dyakonov Grenade.
VKG-40 grenade, (shaped charge grenade).
In the 30’s Dyakonov created/developed the “Граната ВКГ-40 («Винтовочная кумулятивная граната 1940 года»)” also referred to as the VKG-40 grenade.
The letters VKG are just a simple Anglicised version of ВКГ. So, it is simply a straight forward conversion.
The only oddity is some translations will convert this, “Винтовочная кумулятивная граната”, to “Rifle shaped charge grenade”, or “Rifle shaped grenade” or “Rifle cumulative grenade”. Choices.
Am I missing something?
