Primer Protector and Driving Band Fragments

SHAKY

Well-Known Member
Here's my first primer protector and also recently acquired DB pieces. The primer protector is a No. 45 MK 1/2 made by A.W.S ? 1956. It would fit a rim diameter of approx 146 mm. Could someone let me know what casing this is for and if anyone recognizes the driving bands or even the inside pattern for the country of origin ?
Cheers, SHAKY

I really cannot find any information for the primer protector. They seem a little scarce other than ones for 18 pdr's. Any guesses or somewhere I could find this information ?

Hello Shaky, the term for it is actually `cartridge clip' (not to be confused with clips that contain small amounts of SAA) or `safety clip'. You might find more info if you use those terms. As you say, their purpose is mostly to cover the base of a percussion primer, to protect those handling the live ammo. The strap also aids the handler in removing the ammo from its container. They were also fitted to 105 mm Field Gun cases, although the more modern primers are electrically fired. There was at least one thread on this subject a couple of years ago. I will try to find it and post the link here. Here is one: http://www.bocn.co.uk/vbforum/threa...port-storage-devices?highlight=cartridge+clip. And another: http://www.bocn.co.uk/vbforum/threads/76262-another-id-please?highlight=safety+clip

U.S. Navy powder cases were also fitted with primer protectors. I don't recall the official name for them but we Gunners Mates called them "butterflies" because of their shape. I don't have one in my collection nor have I ever seen one for sale or trade. That's a little puzzling since millions of them were manufactured.

Several years ago, when I was trying to find one, I made this drawing to illustrate what I was looking for. Anybody have one they'd like to sell or trade???

Thanks much for the advice. I will try a search as cartridge clip. I have only seen these in old photos ect. including 18 pdr clips which came out of the field and are still being dug up. When I received this, I expecting a "shell carrier " for a 105 mm. Instead of a shell carrier, it was this, and it definitely does not fit a 105 H case nor 105 gun. Closest fit is my 20 pdr case but the case and rim are just a little too wide. If it could be narrowed down to the country, this would help. Other than that it will be like fitting the glass slipper to the proper foot.
Thanks,SHAKY

Thanks tankbarrell. I grabbed the 20 pdr again and it popped right on there unlike the first time. The "Ch" tanks are my favorites so I couldn't be more thrilled.
