Piece of WWI Shell?

My grandmother gave me a piece of shell that she claims her grandfather had from WWI. It is obvious that there have been modifacations to it, it has been cut. All that is left now is the headstamp with no markings, and there is a little hole in the headstamp. I believe it to be a 37mm of some type, but can you tell me for sure. One other peculiar thing is, that the headstamp is pushed outwards, modifacation or something else?
