One for the German experts, projectile and cartridge?

Derek

Well-Known Member
I have just been offered this projectile and case, it measures 90cm in height, the base of the cartridge is stamped ayd 1941 and P11, any ideas what it is? I presume that ayd is a German code stamp, right? Sorry the pics are not too good, they are all I have at the moment!
Thanks,
Derek

Derek
What is the calibre of the shell?

Also is 90cm the total length or just the length of the case?

The seller informs me that the projectile base has a diameter of 110mm, 90cm is the total length.

Ok I will when the shell arrives next week! I have taken the plunge and purchased it......:tinysmile_angry_t:
Cheers,

With a base diameter of 110mm this is tricky.
There is a Czech/German possibility....108x681R for the vz35 gun ( 10cm K35(t) )
Would be good to get proper measurements and headstamp photos when you have the chance.
Thanks
Charley

Shell arrived - Identified as Swedish!

The shell arrived today and what I thought was a German piece turns out to be Swedish! The seller had not correctly identified the makers stamp, it is not ayd 1941 but ADK - 'Arm Depot Karlsborg', 1941. There is a clear P 11 stamp, a small L and some numbers. The case neck diameter is 76mm and the length is 60.2cm. My guess is that this is ammo for the Swedish Bofors M1927 76 mm anti-aircraft gun?

Any comments are welcome!
Thanks,
Derek

I have no idea, I was just guessing, I am far from an expert when it comes to Swedish ordnance! I bow to your greater wisdom............thanks!

Definitely Swedish headstamp. According to Finnish WW2 ordnance manual total length of 76mm M/27 Bofors case is 605mm and rim diameter 109mm. It also has 2 different driving bands.
Are there any markings on shell and fuze?

The shell has been plated at some time, this appears to be quite old as it is worn off in places, I cannot see any markings and there is nothing on the fuze.

Hello....there are two possibilities here.
76.2x603R x108rim Bofors m/27 AA (fixed mounting)
75x604R x109rim Bofors M/37 AA
The m/ denotes army use
The M/ denotes naval use

Bofors seems to have quite a variety of this caliber group AA-guns. Finnish WW2 manual describes also a case 76x505xR93,5 for models 28, 29 and for naval gun 76/48 28. The same case was mentioned for use with Vickers M/34.
I assume each country ordering guns from Bofors at peace years tried to optimise ammunition to suit their standards.
