Old 1942 shell casing

Hi all,

could a forum expert identify this WW2 shell casing for me and advise me what it was used for. Its dated 1942, measures 31 cms long and 6.2 cms at the base and has plenty of marks such as 40mm 1V.

Its not my thing really but its been by the Rayburn, gathering dust for 34 years now and i just wondered about it.

Thanks.

Andy

Hi Dave,

that was rapid, many thanks for that. I just had a suspicion that it may have had an AA role from its shape.
Better give it a polish.

Andy this tells you all about it.
Yours is the L60 version (shorter case).
Dave,

Thanks for that Dave, a real good read.

Now to have a go at cleaning the case of the 4 1/2 inch i have from the Falklands war. That will take some time.
