Hi.. i'm pretty sure i have a 20mm oerlikon round. The base stamp SR seems to come from spennymoor ordnance factory with the ammunition being filled at ayscliffe. Could anyone point me in the direction of some good info on this round... or show me why ive got it all horrendously wrong?

Oelikon

No, you are spot on with your identification. SR is ROF Spennymoor and the OeZ indicates nitro-cellulose load for the Oerlikon.

You might find the attached of interest. They are from the 1944 British military 20mm ammunition pamphlet.

Does anyone know why it has 'JAP' on the base of the shell? It has some unreadable numbers letters underneath this too.

"JAP" is the manufacturer, J.A.Prestwick & Co. Ltd., Nothumberland Park. Sorry but that is the only address I have for them. Th eother figures are probably the manufacturing lot number.

Red shell fuzed should be semi-AP/Incendiary. See the middle colour chart I posted above.
