appears from the markings on the bottom to have been converted from a MkVII
Lower time ring numbered from 0-22
The cap marked DRILL No80 VIII RL /l\ 12-37
Gas escape holes still sealed
The empty internal cavity appears to be black laquered

Allan,

According to my notes no Service Mk VIIIs (designed about April 1918 with malleable cast iron body) were made so I expect the Mk VIII refers to the Drill version (as it says on the tin you might say). The Service Mk VII was made obsolete in 1943.
 
Very Nice Spotter,
I have not seen one of those before, in good condition to as most drill pieeces seem tpo get quite beaten about in service life.
