Was very interesting to read in the national press not long back about the idiots who cut down and then sold the gate sign from the Auschwitz death camp. The sign was soon tracked down to a private collector who had paid an undisclosed sum for the sign and presumably it has since been reaffixed to where it belonged back above the entrance gate. More worrying was the fact that because of the actions of one or two idiots anyone who collects what the press terms "Nazi Memorabilia" are ghouls. I dont think this is true for the majority of us who view the various types of Nazi material produced during WW2 as historical items worthy of preservation, which is what the majority of collectors do and what collecting is all about. I have a Wehrpass in my collection which belonged to a Karl Lutz who was in the invasion of Poland and won the Iron Cross 2nd Class there. Its not the fact that its stamped throughout with Swastikas that fascinates me but the mans military service and background of which most is revealed in the document. In the back cover of the document is a small pocket and when i bought the Wehrpass and got it home i discovered his Iron Cross 2nd Class inside the small pocket minus its ribbon. Not bad for 85 which is what the Wehrpass cost.
