My Collection

Hello All,
I have posted a few of these photos on the introduction forum, but as I have done a clean out of the collectios room, I thought I would post them and a few others here.
This is a photo of most of my WWI uniform collection displayed at Fort Douglas, in Salt Lake City, Utah, this was for a history symposium in October.

Here is a shot of the grenades and wire tools at the same symposium

Here is a selection of bandages and field dressings

Here is a photo looking in my collections room, 17 manniquins crowded into a room 9 x 10 feet.

Wow wow wow

Some really wild stuff there Gus. What a fantastic collection. Must have taken years to muster all that. Great collection that would make the most discriminating collectors envious. WELL DONE my friend. I absolutely love that Portugese helmet in last photo, nice collection of wound dressings, oh hell everything is GREAT...Dano

Thanks Dano,
I started collecting in the mid 60s, my grandmother gave me my grandfather's wound certificate and relic helmet, a few years ago, I found the letter from the War Department to my great grandfather telling him that his son had been wounded.

I am stunned Gus, what a collection. Must have taken a long time and such patient care to get such an amount of really fantastic items to such wonderful display standard. Well done and it certainly deserved to be shown like that.

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Everyone,
If anyone can see something wrong in my collection, please post the error, this type of forum has been the best place to show my collection, as there are so many members that can spot the smallest error (I was once given 2 weeks of confinement to quarters by an ex French Squad leader for having my Poilu's boots tied improperly)
I have seen a lot of small collections presented too, and my collection started out the same way, I have been working at it for over 40 years, on a very limited budget, so I would like to encourage all those who are starting out to keep at it, the best part of collecting is the people you meet.

Thanks for showing your collection Gus, that is a very impressive display. To have such a varied range of equipment must have taken along time and a lot of effort to put together.
Best regards Weasel.

Thanks Weasel,
About a fourth of my collection was acquired before 1979, and the rest in the past 15 years, the internet has been a big help, it took months to get the answer to a question in the 70s, that can be answered in hours (sometimes minutes) with the help of forums such as this one.
The collecting world is a very small one, for example, I first met Dano1917 when I visited his site http://groups.yahoo.com/group/grenadeandordnance/
as I was looking for information about a Russian M1912 Grenade I bought at SOS in Kentucky last year. I bought several grenades from the same seller, and he told me of the collector from whom he purchased them. When I found Dano's site, I read that he had sold many of his grenades a few months earlier, and was sad as I had missed them, and then Dano recognized the grenades I had bought at SOS as being the ones he has sold. I then looked at the photos, and there was the trench photo that showed Dano's collecton, and I could see the grenades that had made it to my collection.

Hey Dano,
I am always sorry when another collector needs to sell off part of their collection, I have done the same myself, but it is nice to know that the assets are there when one needs some extra money. That is one nice thing about collecting, it is like putting money in the bank, and you get to play with the toys while it is earning interest.

Impressiv collection Gus!!!
When I sow first picture I thought that this is some museum not private collection:)

Thank you,
It does spend some of its time in two different museums (I am a director of our local museum) and it is actually small when compared to other private collections that I know, but it has been a great deal of fun to put it together.
I have the good fortune to be able to take my collection to local schools to give lessons from time to time. They do aske that I unload the firearms before I take them into the schools though:) I have only recently started collecting grenades, I have always had a few, but as it is getting more difficult to send them, I have been trying to get a good representation, as most people have never held a grenade, and it is something that always gets the interest of the students, more than the rifles and pistols, as nearly every household in our area has a few firearms.

Gus!

You are everywhere. Are you following me..., or vice-versa??

I've never seen those photos before, but I'm guessing JPS doesn't have much on you. Wonderful collection!!

- Best regards, Mike

Hey Mike,
It is really a small world, and yes, John does have quite a bit on me, even if you take away his rifle collection, he still has nearly twice the uniform and equipment as I do, and a couple of uniforms that I am very envious of too, that is why Olga has to search me every time I leave the collections room, I have surpassed him in handguns and grenades, but that is more thanks to the Republik of Kalifornia than anything else.
Best wishes
Gus
PS, I am following you, I got tired of waiting for you and Trenchy to post the cool stuff from this forum, so I came to the source.
